Historical and Cultural Heritage of Puttalam District
Puttalam’s history dates back to the 3rd–4th century B.C., beginning with the legend of Prince Vijaya and Kuveni at Thambapanni. Ancient texts like the Mahavamsa and Samatha Koota Varnana describe a well-developed civilization with advanced culture and administration. Archaeological findings, such as clay urn burials at Ponparappi, further prove the existence of an organized early society. Its coastal location and trade winds helped the Chilaw–Mannar belt develop into important ports used by Arab, Greek, Persian, and Indian traders.
Puttalam gained further recognition through the visit of Ibn Battuta in 1345 A.D., who described it as a small, beautiful trading city known for cinnamon. Several historical sites remain, including the Dutch-era Kachcheri building, St. Clement’s Catholic Church, and royal gifts to the Mohideen Jumma Mosque. Although many monuments have eroded over time, the hospitality, tolerance, and simple lifestyle of Puttalam’s people continue to reflect its rich heritage and cultural value.
